Inspiring Stories from the Women with Chicken Horticulture Project (WCHP)

Rebecca

My name is Rebecca, a widow and a participant of the Women with Chicken Horticulture project. Before joining in 2023, I depended on subsistence farming of maize and rice on a small half-acre piece of land. Due to climate change and limited land, my yields were very low and could not meet my basic needs, including providing adequate and nutritious food for my family. After joining the project, my life has greatly improved. I started practicing agroecological farming and began cultivating horticultural crops such as okra, African eggplant, amaranthus, cucumber, and Chinese cabbage to increase my income. At the same time, part of the produce is used at home, which has greatly improved our household nutrition through a more diverse and balanced diet. I also ventured into poultry farming and now keep up to 400 broiler chickens, providing both income and a source of protein for my family. With the income I earn from horticulture and poultry, I have been able to buy two dairy cows, which provide chemical-free milk for both home consumption and sale, further improving our nutrition. I have also expanded my maize and rice farm from half an acre to four acres. I am truly grateful to Soil-Animals’ Power Tanzania (SAPTA) for bringing this project, which has transformed my livelihood, strengthened my income, and improved my family’s nutrition and overall well-being.

Julia

My name is Julia, and I proudly identify myself as a poultry keeper. Before joining the WCH project implemented by Soil-Animals’ Power Tanzania (SAPTA) in 2023, I had no poultry experience or business, and my household faced challenges in food security and proper nutrition. Through the training and support I received, I gained valuable skills in poultry management and successfully started from zero to now keeping 500 broiler chickens. This has improved not only my income but also my family’s access to nutritious food, as we now consume poultry products at home. With the income earned, I constructed a pig house and invested in pig farming, growing from 4 sows and 1 boar to 12 pigs. I am truly grateful to SAPTA for bringing this project, which has transformed my livelihood and improved my family’s well-being.
