About SAPTA
Soil-Animals’ Power Tanzania (SAPTA) is a registered non-profit organization committed to enhancing agricultural productivity, food security, community economy, environmental sustainability and climate resilience through sustainable farming practices (agroecological, climate-smart Agriculture and regenerative practices) in Tanzania. Tanzania’s agriculture faces unpredictable weather, unreliable markets, limited farmer knowledge, high production costs, and scarce technologies, making profitable farming challenging. SAPTA addresses these gaps, supporting smallholder farmers to achieve sustainable, productive, and profitable agriculture through nature-based, agroecological, and climate-smart solutions.
SAPTA was established in March 2022 and was officially registered on 11/12/2023 with the registration number ooNGO/R/5479 under the Non-Governmental Organizations Act, No. 24 of 2002, to operate in Tanzania. At SAPTA are deeply committed to contributing to growing agroecology sector and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and national goals and policies.
Our History
In 2022, the organization was founded as a grassroots initiative in Mhonda Ward, Mvomero District, Morogoro Region, Tanzania, after the founder witnessed widows facing extremely low crop and livestock, especially poultry production. These challenges were driven by limited capital and agricultural knowledge, declining soil fertility, unreliable rainfall, high poultry mortality, high pests and diseases, and rising production costs. In response, the founder envisioned a nature-based, low-cost farming approach that harnesses animal power using poultry manure to enrich soils and integrate crop production through a circular economy model leading to the establishment of Soil-Animals’ Power Tanzania.
The founder mobilized four volunteers to support 30 widows through training in agroecological horticulture, seasonal crops, and integrated poultry farming. Applying these skills increased crop yields, reduced chicken mortality, and improved incomes. Their household incomes improved significantly, attracting strong interest from more widows. Growing interest led to the formal registration of SAPTA in December 2023 to scale sustainable impact.
